SABIC is to launch in Europe a new family of special polyethylene grades for the European pharmaceutical packaging industry, as of 1st July 2008. The new grade family will comprise 7 new SABIC® LDPE and 2 SABIC® HDPE grades. The resins offer high purity and consistent quality and are typically used in film, injection and blow molded pharmaceutical packaging applications. “This new addition to our product portfolio is in line with our ambition to be the preferred world leader in chemicals, by developing innovative new products targeted at higher added value niche markets“, said Dieter Hollmann, Business Unit Director HDPE, SABIC Europe. “SABIC has developed these new grades in response to the increasing market need for special grades in pharmaceutical packaging,” said Rolf Scherrenberg, Technical Marketing Manager LD/LLDPE, SABIC Europe. “The long term availability commitment of these grades from a major polyolefins supplier such as SABIC will enable customers to have security of supply and to avoid complex, time consuming approval procedures and processes”.

Shrink film is a major application within the polyethylene resin segment. The majority of the resin consumption in this application is by LDPE (low density polyethylene). Although its development has reached a more or less mature state, shrink film is still a youngster if we compare its age with other traditional packaging materials like, for instance, paper and cardboard. Its advantages and specific properties explain the growth and present importance of shrink film.

At the first Stretch Film Conference organised by Applied Market Information Marcel van Enckevort presented his paper "Stretching the Limits". The paper was based on the cast stretch film trails and a competitor investigation that he conducted at SMS Folientechnik GmBH in Vienna. The goal of these trails was to investigate the effect of processing and casting variables on the ultimate stretch film properties and to position SABIC® LLDPE cast stretch film grades.
