New demands, novel packaging solutions

A clear choice for customers

Food packagingGrowing demand for more transparent, high impact materials is coming from the packaging sector, particularly for food. SABIC has responded with a “best of both worlds” solution – the SABIC®PP CPC Clearpact Range – that combines the transparency of a random copolymer with the impact of a block copolymer.

SABIC®PP CPC35C was the first grade to be launched in the range, specifically designed for the thin wall packaging injection molding market. It has good shock resistance and transparency in use, and is ideal for applications stored at refrigerator temperatures.

For converters, it offers benefits such as high-speed molding, suitability for hot fill and high temperature use, and easy demolding.

The newest addition to the Clearpact range is SABIC®PP CPC04C, offering the same combination of impact resistance and transparency for thin walled packaging coming from thermoforming. This opens up new possibilities for thermoformed packaging, particularly for foods stored at freezer temperatures, and SABIC is working with a number of partners to develop this innovation into new market opportunities.

Positive customer reaction to these first products means that additional grades in the SABIC®PP CPC Clearpact Range are in development, each one opening up novel solutions and clear choices.

The perfect all-rounder

When is a cup not a useful cup? When it’s not round and the lid doesn’t fit! Ovality and warping are big issues when thermoforming cups, creating waste for the converter and filling line problems for the food industry. SABIC’s search for innovative solutions to these problems is fuelled in part by mounting marketplace demand, particularly from the dairy sector.

In partnership with customers and a key additive supplier, SABIC has developed a PP resin, SABIC®PP 526K, which has even shrinkage and is virtually immune to deformation during processing. Add to this a 15% faster cycle time, and SABIC®PP 526K offers manufacturers unrivalled dimensional stability and processing speed.

Transparent cupsAbout 60% of PP food packaging is now transparent, and SABIC®PP 527K offers improvements on the current best optical performance in the market.

SABIC®PP 527K has been developed specifically for thermoforming applications with excellent transparency and topload requirements, improving on the established SABIC®PP 523K. Numerous trials have demonstrated SABIC®PP 527K’s clear advantages in regard to clarity and transparency. Together with the SABIC®PP CPC04C, customers can choose one of SABIC’s complementary resins in order to adjust the performance to their specific needs, be it better impact and transparency or greater transparency and stiffness.
